Dear friends,
on October 24, we will stand together as one planet and call for a fair global climate treaty.
In order to build a global community in support of this goal we ask you to contribute to a global acoustical action on October 24th 2009.
Let us organize on international day of climate action, on October 24th, at 5 to 12 AM Copenhagen (CET) time a 350 hz Signal to be broadcasted all over the world (radio stations, TV stations, etc.) thus synchronizing the world on 350!
The rationale for this action is that scientific research on social synchrony and cooperative behavior shows that practices involving synchrony (e.g., music, dance, and marching) may enable groups to mitigate the free-rider problem and more successfully coordinate in taking potentially costly social action (see Scott S. Wiltermuth and Chip Heath, Synchrony and Cooperation; in: Psychological science, Volume 20—Number 1, 2009).
As the tone f’ is almost exactly 350 Hz individuals and groups of individuals can contribute through singing and with their musical instruments to this acoustical dimension of 350 movement (this could be done at almost all 350 activities on October 24th).
In order to sustain the momentum of the "The world synchronized on 350" initiative from October 24th to UN climate talks in Copenhagen and beyond this call for acoustical action on October 24th is combined with a Call for contributions to a „350 Climate Protection Song World Cup“ . The songs should either thematically address the global efforts for climate change action, climate justice, solidarity, etc. or focus on the tone f’ (some kind of „Improvisations towards 350“, etc.).
This „Climate Protection Song World Cup“ is organized in cooperation with „International Association for the Advancement of Innovative Approaches to Global Challenges IAAI Vienna - Ljubljana“ (a NGO established in 2007 to promote and co-ordinate globally innovative approaches to global challenges, www.glocha.info/iaaiindex.htm) within their "Global Challenges World Cup / Climate Protection World Cup" initiative.
Judit (our 350.org Central and Eastern European Campaign Coordinator in Budapest) and Miro (board member of IAAI and initiator of "the acoustical 350 initiative) will work together on further implementation of the initiative. How you can contribute:
- Contact your radio or TV station to join the initiative (on http://www.glocha.info/glocha350/index.php/list-of-participating-ratio-and-tv-stations ;there will be provided a list of radio and TV stations that have already committed themselves to participate; please consult this list before starting this kind of action)
- Send us your 350 Hz signal (singing, playing an instrument, perhaps you know a celebrity that could contribute her/his 350 Hz signal, too); these signals will be put on http://www.glocha.info/glocha350/index.php/signals homepage in order to provide the radio stations with a choice of signals in addition to the plain tone generator 350 Hz signal
